About us
From Collingwood Today: A story of hope, Founder of new thrift store gives back to place that helped her.
Amy Gilbert once used the services of My Friend’s House.
Her experience left an indelible mark on her toward starting her life anew, and now, she wants to give back to the non-profit that gave her so much.
Gilbert will be opening a new thrift shop in Collingwood at 20 Balsam St. Unit 6, called Common Thread Collingwood, after just signing a lease this week.
Specializing in women’s and children’s clothing to start, all profits from the store will be funneled to My Friend’s House to help local women escaping violence.
Hello!
Common Thread Collingwood envisions a community where every woman and child affected by abuse has access to the support they need to rebuild their lives. More than just a thrift store, we are a community hub offering meaningful volunteer opportunities, fostering hope, and ensuring that every donation and purchase contributes to a sustainable future for My Friend's House.
Our Core Values
At Common Thread, we believe fashion can do more— it can empower, connect, and transform. Our mission is rooted in community, kindness, and creativity, creating a space where every woman feels seen, supported, and celebrated. Through sustainable fashion and inclusive experiences, we’re weaving together a movement that uplifts women and gives back to the community we love so much.
-
We stand with women—especially those rising from challenging chapters.
Common Thread is a tribute to women reclaiming their stories after abuse or adversity. We believe in feminism that’s actionable, offering support, dignity, and strength for survivors as they step into their power. Our thrift store is more than a place to shop. It’s a symbol of resilience, self-worth, and new beginnings.
-
Change starts with bravery.
Inspired by our founder Amy’s own journey, we champion courageous action from seeking help to supporting others. We’re breaking down barriers and stigma around abuse, mental health, and poverty. Every item sold, every conversation shared, is a step toward healing, visibility, and systemic change.
-
We’re not just a thrift store—we’re a hub of human connection.
Common Thread thrives on volunteerism, shared skills, and local love. Our store brings people together to shop affordably, give back meaningfully, and foster relationships rooted in kindness and mutual respect. Whether you’re donating, styling, or helping out behind the scenes, you’re part of something bigger.
-
You deserve to feel good here.
Our store is a bright, inclusive, and judgment-free space. From the moment you walk in, we’re committed to cultivating warmth, joy, and support. Whether you’re shopping, volunteering, or simply stopping by, you’ll find smiles, good vibes, and zero pressure.
-
Fashion should feel fun, expressive, and empowering.
We believe in upcycling, experimenting, and embracing personal style. Secondhand shopping at Common Thread is a treasure hunt where $5 finds can transform your whole vibe. Our workshops and creative events make it easy to learn, grow, and play with style in a way that feels accessible, exciting, and empowering.

Every piece has purpose.
We give new life to pre-loved clothing while reducing waste and supporting women in need. Every purchase and donation helps fund local charities and programs that uplift women and families. Sustainability at Common Thread means caring for people and the planet—one outfit at a time.
